Often, in today’s society, people feel entitled to things they don’t deserve. This principal of the ages can be seen in our weakened economy, a rise in failed marriages, and the extreme debt that seems to stuff each of our pockets giving the appearance of unsightly saddle bags. No, that is not junk in your trunk. It is simply a large, fatty deposit of things you took that you didn’t deserve.
I have recently become acquainted with a large woman in pain. Her back aches. Her ankles are sore. Her hips have begun to cause problems. This woman comes to my clinic for treatment. The reason I dread her arrival has nothing to do with the foul odor left in her wake, or even the difficult process of massaging each roll of her back resulting in extreme muscle fatigue. The reason I dread her arrival is that she is a walking, no, shuffling example of what I could become. She has lived a life of entitlement, taking from others what she did not want to earn for herself. She expects us to cure through therapy what could be resolved through weight loss.
I only hope that I do not end up with a back ache for the 50 dollars I thought I deserved for Christmas at age 9. I hope my ankles don’t swell for each milkshake I have ingested in the name of therapy. I pray my hips don’t give out under the weight of every penny my parents have spent to make me comfortable. And may whoever owns this cake I am eating understand that I really do deserve this delicious slice. I’m sure you owe me something anyway…
